Icon Films for Animal Planet, 2014

In 2013, Hanuman Film was contacted by the producers of the popular Animal Planet television show River Monsters regarding filming a new episode in Cambodia. River Monsters is one of the most popular shows on Animal Planet. In each episode of River Monsters the host, extreme fisherman Jeremy Wade, visits different locations all over the world and investigates cases of people being attacked by mysterious fish. The producers were interested in a series of attacks by an aggressive freshwater fish on locals in Cambodia. The Hanuman Films team began researching the attacks and we were able to contact some of the victims and establish areas where the attacks were most prominent.

Later in the year a member of Icon Films, who produce the River Monsters television show for Animal Planet, visited Cambodia on a recce. During the recce the producer visited some of the most popular fishing destinations in Cambodia including the Tonle Sap Lake in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Kandal Province and Kratie Province.

Based upon the findings during the recce, Icon Films decided that Cambodia had a wealth of fishing opportunities and Cambodia would be an ideal location for the new episode of River Monsters, a date for filming was set for Spring 2014. In the months leading up to the shoot Hanuman Films worked closely with the editorial team at Icon Films to help establish the exact content of the television show and the right locations. Once the locations were established Hanuman Films conducted on site research and made contact with local fishermen and people who had encountered aggressive freshwater fish and had stories to tell. Hanuman Films also began to organize the local permissions through the government, which were required for some of the protected fishing areas in Cambodia.

Hanuman Films provided vehicles for the duration of the shoot as well as two our most experienced Cambodian Fixers. The production started in Phnom Penh where the production team fished with local Cham fishermen before moving to Kandal province to interview fish attack victims. Next the production moved north to Kratie and the presenter Jeremy Wade got the opportunity to fish in some protected fishing areas in search of some of the largest species of fish available in Cambodia. The shoot climaxed on the Tonle Sap with a fishing trip to Prek Toal area where the presenter got the opportunity to catch some fish in one of the world’s most bountiful freshwater fish areas. This new episode of River Monsters can been seen on Animal Planet later this year.
