The Last Reel

A lost film buried beneath the Killing Fields which reveals different versions of the truth. In an abandoned cinema, rebellious teenage daughter Sophoun discovers an old film starring her mother, offering her the chance to dictate her own destiny at last, but at the cost of uncovering some dark secrets from the past about her parents lives during the Khmer Rouge regime.” The Last Reel is an award-winning Cambodian drama produced and directed by Kulikar Sotho and the Hanuman Films team.
Filming took place entirely in Cambodia in 2013 including the Temples of Angkor, Phnom Penh, Battambang and Tonle Bati, with a mostly Cambodian crew supported by a few key experienced foreign technicians. The film was shown at over 60 film festivals around the world, winning the Spirit of Asia award at the Tokyo International Film Festival on its premiere in 2014 and the Founder’s Grand Prize at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival in 2016. It played in Cambodian cinemas for five weeks in 2015 and was also distributed in Japanese cinemas as Theater Phnom Penh, including a one-month run at the Iwanami Hall.
